Trauma Intensives

What to Expect During an EMDR Intensive

An EMDR intensive is a focused form of EMDR therapy designed to provide more dedicated time and space for trauma processing than traditional weekly therapy sessions.

EMDR intensives can be especially helpful for clients who want to work more intentionally on trauma, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, difficult life experiences, or patterns that continue to affect their emotional well-being.

What Happens During an EMDR Intensive?

Before beginning trauma processing, we will spend time getting to know your history, identifying your goals, and making sure you have the coping and grounding skills needed to feel safe and supported throughout the process.

During the intensive, we may use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help your brain process distressing memories and experiences that may still feel emotionally or physically activated in the present.

What We May Focus On

Depending on your treatment goals and individual needs, we may focus on:

  • Past traumatic experiences
  • PTSD symptoms and trauma-related distress
  • Anxiety and fear responses
  • Difficult childhood experiences
  • Emotional neglect or attachment wounds
  • Relationship patterns and interpersonal triggers
  • Negative beliefs about yourself
  • Specific memories that continue to cause distress
  • Current situations that activate old emotional wounds
  • Future situations you anticipate with fear or anxiety

What Might You Experience?

EMDR therapy does not require you to describe every detail of a traumatic experience. You remain in control of what you share and how quickly we move through the material.

During processing, you may notice changes in emotions, body sensations, thoughts, memories, or perspectives. Some clients experience a greater sense of emotional distance from previously distressing memories, while others notice new insights or connections developing naturally.

It is also normal to experience periods of tiredness, increased emotions, vivid dreams, or continued processing between sessions. We will work together to make sure you have appropriate grounding techniques, coping strategies, and resources for emotional regulation throughout the intensive.

Why Choose an EMDR Intensive?

Traditional weekly therapy can be highly effective, but some clients prefer the concentrated format of an intensive. An EMDR intensive therapy session provides extended therapeutic time with fewer interruptions, allowing us to maintain momentum while working toward specific treatment goals.

Is an Intensive a Good Fit?

An intensive may be a good fit if you are:

  • Looking for focused trauma therapy
  • Experiencing symptoms related to PTSD or anxiety
  • Wanting to address a specific traumatic experience
  • Feeling stuck despite previous therapy
  • Interested in a more concentrated approach to EMDR treatment
  • Looking to make meaningful progress while still maintaining a safe, individualized pace

Your Safety and Comfort Come First

EMDR intensives are not about rushing through trauma. The goal is to create enough time and space for meaningful therapeutic work while respecting your nervous system, readiness, and individual needs.

Your intensive will be tailored to you. We will regularly assess your level of activation and adjust the pace and focus of treatment as needed.

EMDR therapy can be a powerful tool for trauma recovery, but healing is not a race. The goal is not simply to remember what happened. It is to help you experience greater safety, flexibility, and freedom in the present.
