Couples Counseling: Rebuilding Connection and Strengthening Your Relationship.

Couples counseling is truly one of the most unique areas in the therapy world. While many couples seek support to improve communication, rebuild trust, or reconnect emotionally, insurance companies do not formally recognize “couples counseling” or “marriage counseling” as reimbursable treatment. Because diagnoses are created for individuals—not relationships—insurance will only cover sessions under the modality of family therapy, and one partner must meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis to qualify.

It Takes Two.

We want both of you to feel like it was worth your time to come in and also that it is not something to be hated or scared of. At the same time typically there is one member of the couple that needs to make immediate changes. Takes two to get here, both to be honest with themselves, both to compromise and someone to take the first action step. Our goal is to help.

  • Interventions help aid in communication.
  • We work to understand the needs of both.
  • Couples work together to overcome challenges.

Our Approach to Couples Therapy.

All couples come in with a shared experience: feeling less connected than they want to be. One partner is often more hesitant or resistant to starting therapy, and we honor that. Our goal is to create a safe, productive environment where both individuals feel respected, supported, and hopeful about the process.

During counseling, we use evidence-based interventions to:

  • Improve communication
  • Build emotional and physical intimacy
  • Strengthen trust and understanding
  • Identify patterns that may be causing conflict
  • Support both partners in making meaningful changes

We recognize that relationships require effort from both sides—but often one person needs to take the first step. Our role is to guide you through that process with compassion, clarity, and practical tools.

Session Length and Structure.

Many couples prefer 90-minute sessions, as the extended time allows both partners to feel heard and allows us to make meaningful progress in each meeting. When needed, we also offer 50-minute sessions that are typically covered by insurance. Session lengths are planned in advance to help ensure a predictable schedule for you and your therapist.

How We Work With Insurance.

At Life Encounter Counseling, we are committed to helping you access the care you need while staying within ethical and professional guidelines. When appropriate, we can bill insurance under the family therapy modality, and we will discuss your options clearly so you understand how sessions can be structured.

What To Expect.

At Life Encounter Counseling, we try to be as creative as possible within ethical parameters to get you the help you need and are asking for.

We have learned that oftentimes a 90 minute session is preferred because of the need for good work to get done and both partners feeling heard. However, many times we can get enough accomplished in the 50 min session insurance will reimburse for.

We plan out session time allotments ahead of time as our therapists will have clients before and after your session.
