My Basic explanation:
It is controlled movement to a near sleep state in which the mind becomes open to sincerely receive/entertain suggestions of how to be.
My SUPER basic explanation:
It is when a person takes you down in relaxation almost to the point of sleeping and then uses that space to help you do something different in your life.
Maybe even more simple explanation:
Being in a state in which your conscious moves into the passenger seat and your unconscious moves into the driver’s seat.
- A controlled movement to a near sleep state.
- The mind becomes open to sincere suggestions.
- Get help to do something different in your life.
- Your unconscious mind moves into the driver’s seat.
Real Life Situation.
Are you familiar with getting in your car, leaving work, driving home then all of sudden “waking up”?
You’re at a random traffic light when you realize your almost home but you don’t remember getting home.
The state you were in was both unconscious and conscious state.
Unconscious.
Besides flat out sleep, unconscious acts are those actions taken without conscious thought. More than 95% of your day is actually unconscious. Yep… Here’s why.
You are reading this right now. You are not trying to read it, you are not sounding out words. Your mind just understands these words automatically.
You learned to read a long time ago. You are doing this unconsciously.
When you drive you are not thinking about how to turn the steering wheel you just see where you want to go and your hands start turning it.
You don’t think about how to catch a ball you just catch it.
All of these automatic things are unconscious.
It’s Not Sleep.
If you’ve ever been drunk before and passed out at night you are not sleeping. You are unconscious but you are not all the way asleep.
Scientists have identified that actual normal sleep is not happening. Your body is processing the alcohol and as it does that you get more and more TO sleep.
Also, when you consider the paragraph above…you’re not sleeping when you’re catching a ball.
What is Hypnosis? FAQ
Hypnotized?
Our minds and attention seem to process life in waves we are less and more conscious of life at certain intervals.
We listen in intervals. We pay attention in intervals. It is easier to think of hypnosis in this way.
When you are hypnotized you are conscious at times and you are unconscious at times.
Think of conscious as being at the tippy top of a wave and unconscious as being in the valley between the waves. The more hypnotized you are the wider the valleys are in between the waves.
What’s the point?
I get asked a lot “what does it do?” or “would it work for____?” The truth is I have to answer “maybe.”
Hypnosis has been used for all kinds of things. It’s been used to quit smoking, lower anxiety, weight loss all the way to such things as eliminating ailments such as cancer.
Is it dangerous?
It definitely can be. There is a lot of trust you are giving the Hypnotherapist. You are putting yourself into a very vulnerable position. It is important that you trust your therapist.
Is it for me?
Ask yourself:
“Do I trust this therapist?”
“Can I concentrate very well?” (ADHD and medications can affect the ability to be hypnotized).
“Do I want to be hypnotized?”
“Does the therapist work with the issues that I want to work with hypnotherapeutically?”
“Am I in the military?” (Individuals with some high level clearances could lose their clearance).
“Will a court case be affected?” (Any testimony affected by hypnosis will be inadmissible).
