Everything Happens For a Reason

As I sit here thinking about the Thanksgiving and Christmas season I have a few thoughts. These thoughts are based in belief and therefore biased by nature. I would challenge you to read through either way and “translate” it to yourself if need be.

I often hear “I know everything happens for a reason but…” The truth is everything does not happen for a reason. God created this universe and oversees all parts. However, the bible is clear we have freewill AND we have an enemy. We as humans are battling what our body wants, what we believe God wants and what seems to be an attack from the outside.

The Bible says in the book of Romans 8:28 “All things work together for the good for those who love God according to His purpose.”  We have the freedom to kill each other. Is God “ok” with that? No. In fact one of the 10 commandments is “thou shalt not kill.” That is where God stands and has brought things into order.  But we don’t have to obey.  So when one is killed by another it is because of another person exercising their freewill that indeed is God given. That is certainly not a good reason! And what meaning could we possibly bring to that?!?!

Essentially the Bible is about God telling us how we were designed to work. We were designed to operate in submission to the will of God through his Spirit toward each other. Jesus proved that this could be done and showed us what it would look like. He showed that submission literally leads to being raised from the dead.  When people are just doing their own thing things are happening for the reason of their own choosing. There is very little meaning in that. However, if we trust Romans 8:28 God can help us through this life and make purpose out of whatever happens to or through us!

Everything does not happen for a reason. It makes sense that we would need to make sense out of everything because God designed us in His image. God Himself brings order to things. Therefore it is in our nature to do the same. But without His perspective there is no meaning.

In closing Thanksgiving is not about family it is about agreeing with who we are before God and giving thanks. The incredible thing is that God loves us and designed us to BE loved and participate in it. That is why we try to find the good. God is love. God is good. Give thanks. Be blessed and have a happy and joyous holiday season!
